As I clearing up space in my google drive, discarding old and irrelevant documents that have been frozen there for years, I came across the original copy of The Fun Manifesto, circa 2010. Was that really 6 years ago?!
It was interesting to read through some of my past Fun work. I can hear my voice clearly, and though I would consider it a pretty strong representation of what I was trying to communicate at the time, I would take it through another round of editing. But all critiques aside, I enjoyed reading this blast from the past very much. I'll leave you with the The Fun Philosophy and what that means:
"The Fun Philosophy is simple: Having reckless abandon and embracing your inner weirdness. Now, there is a difference between being self-confident and being conceited. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines confidence as “a. full of conviction: certain <confident of success> <confident that conditions will improve>; b. having or showing assurance and self-reliance <a confident young businessman> <a confident manner>” or “obsolete: trustful, confiding” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/confident).
Along with confidence comes self-confidence, a large component of having fun. The meaning of self confidence is “confidence in oneself and one’s powers and abilities” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/selfconfidence). For one to have powers is pretty impressive, especially if they are super human powers. If you fall under this category, remember to always use your powers for good. Rarely does anyone see super villains having a good time. They are usually unhappy, thus lacking in having fun. Avoid this at all costs.
Anyway, back to defining the Fun Philosophy. Being confident is good when there’s a healthy balance. However, if one oversteps their bounds and beings to have a conceited outlook, more so than a confident one, they may be in for some trouble. Conceited means to be “a. ingeniously contrived: fanciful; b. having or showing an excessively high opinion of oneself” (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/conceited). This is not an appropriate way to live one’s life overall and can cause harm to others, including members in both your Personal and General audiences (more on this later).
To be confident in your own quirkiness and strive to break the bounds of normalcy is the mission of the Fun Philosophy. When you can accept yourself for who you are, work on the things you would like to change, be forgiving of any imperfections, use your own strengths and talents, and not think too highly of yourself, you will be able to take on the Fun Philosophy as your own. This is just the beginning of an exciting and new journey that will bring you and others you meet along the way great joy."
Do you think this is a clear definition of what it means to live a Fun life? I'm definitely interested in hearing what you all think. I might start posting my older thoughts and musings from the original Fun Manifesto; it's kind of inspiring to look back to when it started and see how much has held up over the years.
Happy Spring everyone!
